KODAI HILL GARLIC VEGETABLES COLLECTIVE FARMING PRODUCER COMPANY LIMITED is a registered Farmers Producers Company headquartered in Poondi Taluk of Kodaikanal, Dindigul District. The aim of the company is to improve the quality of life of its member farmers by making value added products from agricultural products and marketing them.
FPC Background
There is no alternative to farming. But it is also not good to keep engaged in loss-making agriculture, which pushes one into poverty for generations. Therefore, it is necessary to convert farming into a profitable activity. For future generations to adopt farming, there is need to bring innovation in agriculture. Farming should be made into a business which adds value, thereby making it profitable. To increase yields of farmers and also to get their fair prices, the whole process of farming will have to be transformed. For the farmer to get his manure, seeds and other inputs at a reasonable price, it is necessary that the farmers unite in groups and benefit from economies of scale. That is, whatever they buy, they buy together in bulk and whatever they sell, they sell it together in bulk. For this, the farmers will have to operate with the mindset of a businessman. The government has come up with a policy of uniting farmers into a farmers business enterprise i.e., a Farmer Producer Company (FPC).
What is FPC?
A farmer producer company is a group of farmers who are engaged in agricultural production & allied work and have similar thinking in running agricultural business activities. Farmers from one village or several villages can form this group together. The main objective of the FPC is to form agrarian businesses by registering as a company, namely Farmer Producing Company (FPC).
India, a country of six lakh villages, needs at least one lakh FPCs to transform agriculture. . Other Asian countries have used solutions suitable to them for dealing with the problem of small farms. Japan has the concept of part-time farmers while Thailand has used the contract farming model and China has adopted collective farming.
